What to make with potted meat

  • pointsevenout 10 years ago
I am the benefactor of several small cans of potted meat. There is only one recipe here at GR for the ingredient.
    I would like other options.

Points, When you say potted meat. What exactly do you mean by that? Canned beef, ham, chicken, spam or what?

I'm not sure what it is. Just finished surfing about it. Seems it is detested more than Spam. It looks like a cooked finely ground meat substance that is way salty and packed in oil. Tastes like mush. I think it's something they wouldn't even put in hotdogs.
This came out of a care package, so there is no ingredient label on it.

I did a quick search as well b/c I had never heard of it either.
Here is what I copied from what someone said they did with it. Hopefully this might give you some ideas?
Add some salsa to it, wrap in small tortillas with cheese, deep fry (or partially fry, then bake) until tortilla is crisp. Quick taquitos. you can add some black beans or refried beans, too.
Mix it with bbq sauce, then fill crescent rolls with it and roll up. you have to use the BIG crescent rolls, though. I have also used flaky biscuits, cut in half lengthwise, then flattened and stuffed with it. Bake as directed on package.
Mix it into mac & cheese, or use it in Hamburger Helper instead of ground meat
make beef noodle casserole (use your fave tuna noodle casserole and substitute beef for tuna)
Make baked potatoes with various meat toppings by mixing it with salsa, hot wing sauce, bbq sauce, chili, etc
Make cowboy cornbread: combine the beef with bbq sauce and place in the bottom of an 8x8 baking pan. Drain a can of corn or mixed veggies and spread on top. Prepare 1 box of Jiffy cornbread mix and pour on top. Bake as directed on cornbread box.*you can also pour half the cornbread batter into the bottom of the pan first to create a crust.
Make shepherd's pie: combine 3 carrots, sliced thin, 2 potatoes, chopped small, 1 can corn (drained), 6 c water and 1 pkg McCormick beef stew mix in a saucepan. Bring to a boil and cook 30 minutes on high (it should thicken a little). Add a few cans meat then pour into a 9x13 pan. Top with mashed potatoes (I make homemade, but you could use instant). Bake 30 minutes at 350.

    I also found

Get you some large Jalapenos and cut the cap off, gut them out and back fill with potted meat and cream cheese. Don't blend them and fill, rather put the cheese on one side of the inside and the potted meat on the other. Dunk in egg wash, then seasoned flour, back into the wash and finish in panko. Then deep fry those bad boys until medium golden brown. Drain and salt.

Or, how about making Potted Meat Dumplings? That would require experimentation, but I imagine mixing potted meat, flour, egg and seasonings and maybe a 1/2 tsp of baking powder mixed and boiled in broth might work.

How about Potted Meat Ravioli? Make some pasta dough, fill with a potted meat mixture and seal as ravioli or other stuffed pasta. make a cheesy white sauce or your normal Italian gravy for it.

Mix it with some finely chopped onion and or pickle with miracle whip eat with crackers or as a spread on a sandwich.

I think anything to cut the saltiness is a good thing. Straight up is not good for me.
Spread some on a slice of bread then covered it with some stuffed cabbage. Much better.
Might try mixing it in some scalloped potatoes in lieu of the salt.

I wanted to let every one know that I May Be Gone For A While.I wanted to get away from the internet for a while and clear my head.I've been so depressed.I don't know when I'll be back.I wanted to let everyone know. That way that no one wouldn't wonder if I had left the face of the earth.
