Kings Arms Tavern Sweet Potatoes

Historic Williamsburg Virginia is a recreated period town. The last time I was there, each tavern served food representative of a specific period of the town's history. This recipe is from Kings Arm Tavern, but may or may not be on their current menu. Read more Prep time is for raw sweet potatoes. If you take a shortcut and use drained canned sweet potatoes prep time will only be about 10 minutes. See less
Ingredients
- 3 lb sweet potatoes shopping list
- 3/4 cup firmly packed brown sugar, divided shopping list
- 3 Tbsp butter shopping list
- 1/2 tsp cinnamon shopping list
- 1/2 tsp nutmeg shopping list
- 1/4 tsp salt shopping list
- 1 cup milk shopping list
How to make it
- Cook & peel and mash sweet potatoes.
- Preheat oven to 400.
- Butter a 1 1/2 qt casserole.
- Hold back 2 Tbsp brown sugar and add rest of ingredients to the mashed sweet potatoes.
- Turn into casserole dish.
- Sprinkle with 2 Tbsp brown sugar.
- Bake 30 minutes.

I have made this every year for about 20 yrs. everyone loves it.
This recipe serves more like 10 (not 6).
This is the recipe from my Williamsburg Cookbook, and I just saw the pdf from the Williamsburg website, so it is current.
